A Room-by-Room Deep Cleaning Checklist
Regular tidying keeps a home livable, but every so often a deeper clean makes a big difference. Breaking the job into rooms and specific tasks keeps it manageable. You do not need to do everything in a single day; spreading the work over a few weekends is perfectly reasonable.
Before you start
Gather supplies so you are not interrupted: microfiber cloths, an all-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, a scrub brush, a vacuum with attachments, a mop, and trash bags. Work from top to bottom in each room so dust falls onto areas you have not cleaned yet, and declutter before you clean so surfaces are actually reachable. Always follow product labels and never mix cleaning chemicals, especially bleach and ammonia.
Kitchen
- Empty the refrigerator, discard expired items, and wipe shelves and drawers.
- Clean the microwave by heating a bowl of water with lemon, then wiping the softened residue.
- Degrease the stovetop, range hood, and filter.
- Clean the oven following the manufacturer's instructions.
- Wipe cabinet fronts, handles, and the backsplash.
- Descale the kettle and clean the coffee maker.
- Scrub the sink and run the dishwasher's cleaning cycle or clean its filter.
Bathrooms
- Scrub the shower, tub, and tiles, paying attention to grout.
- Wash or replace the shower curtain liner.
- Clean the toilet thoroughly, including the base and behind it.
- Clear out the medicine cabinet and dispose of expired products appropriately.
- Wipe mirrors, fixtures, and light switches.
- Wash bath mats and check the exhaust fan for dust.
Bedrooms
- Wash bedding, including pillows and duvets if their labels allow.
- Vacuum or rotate the mattress as recommended.
- Dust headboards, nightstands, lamps, and ceiling fans.
- Clean under the bed and sort the closet, setting aside items to donate.
Living areas
- Dust shelves, picture frames, and electronics.
- Vacuum upholstery and under cushions.
- Wash throw blankets and pillow covers.
- Clean windows, sills, and tracks.
- Wipe baseboards, door frames, and light switches.
- Vacuum and mop floors, moving furniture where possible.
Often-forgotten spots
Some areas are easy to overlook during routine cleaning:
- Light fixtures and lampshades
- Air vents and return grilles
- The tops of doors, cabinets, and the refrigerator
- Trash cans themselves
- Remote controls, keyboards, and phones
- Washing machine seals and detergent drawers
Check on safety items
A deep clean is a good moment to test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, replace batteries if needed, check the expiry date on any fire extinguisher, and replace HVAC filters according to the manufacturer's schedule.
Keep it up
To make the next deep clean easier, adopt a few small daily habits: wipe kitchen counters after cooking, spend ten minutes tidying each evening, and deal with mail as it arrives. A little maintenance prevents big buildup.
